I am responding to this with myself. You see 7 years ago I became paralyzed from back surgery. I could not do anything from the waist down by myself. I had two small kids, lived with my mom and did not know what I would do. I was embarassed having someone have to clean me after the bathroom and wash me in the shower. Slowly I learned to walk again. It was a hard fought process. I also slowly got my bladder function back. After a while I could walk but wore a brace and would never wore shorts because I did not want people to see. In November of 2011 I had surgery to fix my foot so that I could walk with out a brace. For the first time in 7 years I can walk without a brace. I am no longer embarassed for my kids to be seen with me. So I feel I have put a very hard fight up.

My husband Gene deserves a medal. He works hard every day to support my children & I & is the sole supporter of our family. Ever since I lost my job in Janruary he has been the sole supporter & has been very supportive in my search for work. He never complains but only works hard everyday. He never asks for anything & gives his all every day. I am so lucky to have him.

He worked hard all of his life and always did everything he could to care for us even though he suffered with PTSD and health problems that have increasingly worsened since his service. He has been a great Father and deserves recognition.

My nephew Travis deserves a medal for standing up for who he is a making the huge decision to leave home and go across the Country to be with his Dad. He did not have a chance to really get to know his Dad and our side of the family growing up, but once he turned 20 he was able to stand on his own 2 feet and make the decision which had to be heart wrenching…to leave everything he knew. I know that he will go onto do great things and now he will really have that chance living in a bigger city with much more opportunity. Congrats Travis and really good job! It was a huge step that most of us are too scared to take! I love you! Aunt Ocie And that is why my nephew deserves a medal for courage!

I have been taking care of my beautiful grandmother with dementia for two years now and frankly could use a cookie! There are many reasons I think Peter should get a medal for his selflessness and his willingness to help others. I could give many examples I know like feeding and watering a cat every 4 hours to prevent the cat from dying too soon of his kidney disease, to giving his last buck to a homeless person. But, the main reason I think he deserves a medal is that he provided caregiving to his step-dad who was abusive and had Huntington’s, just so his mom wouldn’t have to deal with him. And neither person treated him decently either but he still did it.

Dawn deserves a medal for sure! She has been through so much over the years, finding out she has Tumid LE (newer form of lupus), had to have ovary removal just a couple years ago, followed by rotator cuff (shoulder) repair surgery. She is almost done healing from getting a horrible ‘wart’ removed from her foot. Just went to the doc yesterday bc she has had a ‘cyst’ under her armpit & just won’t go away..doc confirmed a month or 2 ago that it’s staph & is now setting her up with..another surgeon.! My mom, Angel, definitely deserves a medal!! She has four children me being the second oldest. Although we are all out of high school and out of the house she is still insistent on helping with anything she can for us! I live two states away and have a 1 1/2 year old son. I know she misses us dearly and we don’t have the money to visit her often! The last few times we have been to visit were all because of her and Daddy! They have very little extra most times but she saves to be sure we have what we need and to get to see me and my son! She has been through a lot the last few years with the death of her mother to breast cancer and her friend being diagnosed as well. She is one of the strongest people I know! Her life has not been the easiest but she does not let that get her down! She works through any problem life throws at her and somehow manages to keep the rest of us going at the same time!! Even through these tragedies, she managed to show up to the seminars promptly at 7AM. She worked through her grief while supporting us. That’s a true testament to her commitment. A low income, first generation college student herself, she earned her PhD and came back to our institution and implemented a program to help others obtain funding for and gain entry to doctoral programs. She is the epitome of determination, leadership, and selfless contribution. I would love to honor her!

Right now she has foster kids that have been with her for over a year and it’s looking like she will be able to adopt them. She gave up a promotion at her work because she knew that she wouldn’t be able to have the time for these foster kids if she did. She has given them so much, has a good routine with them, does alot of fun things with them, and shown them the love they never knew. She treats them like her own kids and has since day 1. Beth, my mother is deserving for this award. Back in May 2009 I lost my son. I wouldn’t eat or do anything. I had another child to take care of at that time. My mother stepped up to the plate and worked her butt off to make sure my daughter and I were taken care of. Even when she was falling apart herself. She put herself on the back burner so I could grief the loss of my baby. It takes a strong mother to stand there and not break down when their child is broken in many pieces. I was a single mom then and to lose my child was the hardest thing I could ever have happen. My daughter who was 5 at the time. Was also strong. She knew what was going on. She held her little brother and didn’t cry but knew he was gone. To this day she still gets upset but not as often. My mother, she is an angel because without her, I would not be the mother I am today. So here is to my mother Beth! Love ya and thank you for being there for me when you were breaking too!

To only choose one is hard. Being that is my limit I would have to say my best friend Greg! He is always giving and never selfish. He works three jobs and never complains. Greg has a great family and is a wonderful husband. He helped me when my family and I were homeless due to a fire. He helped me get back on my feet. I owe him a lot for helping me much more than I could ever repay. Even if he doesn’t win he is a Gold medalist in my heart!!

My mom Phyllis really seriously deserves a gold medal because in spite of being 76 years old, she takes care of everybody! My dad who is 81 and a blind veteran, my sister in law a breast cancer survivor who now has bone cancer and my brother who is disabled. It’s seems like nearly every day she’s running someone to doctors appointments (some of which are specialists over an hour away), treatments, picking up prescriptions, doing their shopping and she has health issues of her own! She also finds time to volunteer at her church & is in charge of putting together a Christmas party, purchasing & wrapping presents every year for over 100 local disadvantaged kids! This woman, whom I’m proud to call mom, surely deserves a treat if not a gold medal! By the way, my dads nickname is “Cookie Monster” because he loves your cookies & I know my mom…she’d share!!! ;~)

My husband John. He’s sacrificed so many years of having a life to go to school for a job with massively crazy hours that’s not very family friendly so I could stay home to raise our children. He’s been very careful to save for the future, for college for the kids, etc so we have a secure life. He also made sure to take off time from work to show up for kids’ events and to go on family vacations to keep connected with his family. I’m nominating my daughter Nicole, She’s amazing and has made it through so much. For one, she’s adopted. As well, she’s an orphan from her birth parents. She’s such a joy to be around. She brightens my life when I feel like I can’t go on. She’s such an motivational person, and has never given up. She’s the first in her birth family to graduate from High School, so for her she tells me that’s a huge accomplishment. One thing I can say, she does is she stays positive in whatever situation she may be going through. She’s teaching so many of her friends and even myself that even when tough times hit you hard you just have to find a positive outlook on it. I hope my daughter continues to teach this lesson on whoever she meets in her life. When I look at her, I can’t ever imagine myself walking in her shoes, but I’m grateful she’s my daughter. My fiancé Eric deserves a medal for his heart of gold! We met in the summer of 2007 at a friends birthday party and by fall we started dating. Everything was going so well it literally felt like a dream. Not even a month into our relationship, my health took a turn for the worse and everything changed. I lost my job and then right after Thanksgiving, my grandmother passed away. Eric barely knew my grandmother and it meant the world to me when he was by my side with all the trips to the nursing home and holding my Babcia’s hand (grandmother in Polish) when we said our final goodbye to her. Most guys wouldn’t know how to cope with all these things and instead of leaving, he was always there for my family and I. He proposed to me on my birthday in Oct of 2010 and our wedding date was supposed to be 11-11-11. Instead of a beautiful day, I was laying in a hospital bed. We decided to wait for when the time is right and for my health to improve before we set another date. Through thick and thin, Eric is my #1!

Now he works 55+ hours/wk at an almost-living-wage job. Yet he still finds time to volunteer with a food distribution non-profit for the needy, a non-profit soup kitchen of sorts, and a non-profit that helps with physically and mentally disabled adults. Seems like he’s always helping others, even as his own life is in shambles. I’d give him a medal for his genuine love for people and his service to his community. <3

my daughter amanda should get a medal, not just because she is a great daughter, but because she can not stand bullys. it dosen’t matter who is doing the bullying, large or small, friend or foe, and it doesn’t matter if the person being bullyed is a friend or someone she has never even seen. she will all ways stand up for the person being bullyed. there have been many times she has come home from school telling me that she almost got beat up, or that she was yelled at and threatned all because she stood up for some one who was being bullyed. the most amazing thing is that i have never had to “teach” her this, its just a part of who she is. with all the peer presure she has to deal with she always chooses the right path. i am not saying that she is perfect, just that she is a good girl, and thats not always easy to find now a days. thank you
