Silk-Tie Eggs & Silky Egg Salad

It’s 2-for-1 today! I’ve got a  fabulous decorating idea for your Easter eggs, plus a smooth and silky egg salad recipe to use once your egg hunting is done. I was going to say that they’re both eggs-ellent ideas, but I don’t like to yolk around when I’m talking about Easter eggs. (Not funny? No?)

First, you must try this incredibly cool egg decorating idea found via Martha Stewart. (You can watch a short, instructional video here.) You’ll be amazed at the level of detail that transfers onto each egg–they look like works of art! Plus, it’s a fun alternative to the boxed decorating sets.

Silk-Tie Easter Eggs
via MarthaStewart.com

Small- to medium-size raw eggs
Glass or enamel pot
Silk ties, blouses, or boxers, cut into pieces large enough to cover an egg
White sheets (or pillowcases or old tablecloths), cut into pieces to cover silk-wrapped eggs
Twist ties
3 tablespoons of white vinegar
Warm water
Vegetable oil
Paper towels
Tongs or spoon

Directions
1. Cut silk into a square (or a piece) large enough to wrap around a raw egg.

2. Wrap a raw egg with a piece of silk, making sure the printed side of the material is facing the egg. Silk can still be used if it doesn’t fit perfectly around egg.

3. Place the silk-wrapped egg in a piece of white sheet, pillowcase, or old tablecloth and secure tightly with a twist-tie.

4. Place the egg(s) in an enamel or glass pot. Fill pot with water to cover eggs completely. Then, add three tablespoons of white vinegar.

5. Bring water to a boil, turn heat down, and simmer for 20 minutes (longer if you plan on eating the eggs).

6. Remove eggs from water with tongs or spoon and let cool.

7. Remove silk from cooled egg.

8. For shiny eggs, wipe with vegetable oil after completing step 7.

TIP: Find old silk ties, blouses, and boxers at thrift stores or rummage sales for pennies apiece!

And now for what to do with all of those beautiful eggs the day after Easter. Here is a silky egg salad recipe that will leave your lips smacking! The dill adds a delightfully fresh flavor, perfect for a casual springtime lunch.

Egg Salad with Fresh Dill

12 eggs, hard boiled, peeled and diced
1/2 cup celery, finely chopped
2/3 cup mayonnaise
2/3 cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt
3 tablespoons yellow mustard
1-2 scallions, finely chopped
2-3 tablespoons chopped fresh dill
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper

Directions
Combine mayonnaise, sour cream (or yogurt), mustard, dill, scallions, salt, and pepper in a large mixing bowl. Fold in diced eggs and celery and mix until combined. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cover and chill before serving on sandwiches, pitas, or crackers.

Are Mrs. Fields Chocolate Chip Cookies a Reason to Cheat?

It’s widely believed that if someone else buys a treat for you, the calories don’t count. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to get my hands on the scientific evidence to support this, but I’m sure the tests continue in earnest.

So imagine the day when you show up to work on your birthday, or you’ve been feeling a little down and someone brings you a nice gift to cheer you up, unaware that you are in the middle of a strict diet that requires you to avoid all desserts and anything that resembles a snack food. With the best intentions the world has ever seen, your friend drops a wonderfully tempting basket of Mrs. Fields chocolate chip cookies in front of you.

Your friend will stand there with a hopeful smile as a tiny war breaks out inside your head. You’re not going to get away with a mumbled, “Thank you, I’ll try these later,” this time. They want you to give them a taste. Right now. They want to see that their gift had the desired effect.

What are you to do? Cheat?

No! You’ve been good for a long time now.

But then you think–is it really going to hurt that much? Plus, you’ve been craving Mrs. Fields chocolate chip cookies since the day your diet began.

Then again, all it takes is one slip-up to ruin all your resolve.

But those cookies look so good! The smell alone is irresistible!

And your friend looks so happy to have found a great gift for you.

This internal struggle could continue indefinitely, or at least until your friend starts to look at you strangely. Sometimes the only thing you can do is consider the situation reversed. How do you feel when you are giving a gift? Whether it is a basket of Mrs. Fields chocolate chip cookies or something else entirely, you want to know that your gift really meant something to the recipient.

If that’s the case, maybe it’s worth a little cheating. The Diet Police are completely understanding on this one. Plus, there’s a very scientific way of cutting the calories in half–invite your friend to sit down and share!

Who Deserves a Medal (Tin)?

Embossed Silver Tins

Embossed Silver Tins

Are you caught up in the Olympic spirit yet? I can’t get enough of it. I love watching the events, getting caught up in the back stories, celebrating the victories, and mourning the disappointments. The athletes are amazing and inspiring.

But non-athletes are amazing and inspiring too, which got me to thinking: Where are the medals for the everyday people who quietly reach for excellence, working hard to achieve goals that are otherwise unnoticed?

Maybe it’s up to you and me to notice. Today, let somebody know that you’re proud of them. Thank them for always going above and beyond what is expected. Reward them for hard work that is otherwise unrewarding. Congratulate them on a personal victory. Celebrate their determination.

Trust me, it will make you feel like gold!

Calling All Procrastinators!

You’re the one, aren’t you? The one who puts everything off until the last minute, and sometimes beyond? The one who drives around with a bumper sticker that says, “Always late, but worth the wait!”  The one whose “Be right there!” means “Two hours at least!”

The one who forgot that Valentine’s Day is Sunday?

It’s okay; I still like you. You have many other wonderful qualities. But today I thought it would be a fun to highlight the procrastinators out there among the readership–the ones who find themselves today without a special gift for their special someone. No matter if you’re a chronic procrastinator like those mentioned above, or an accidental procrastinator busy digging three feet of snow out of your driveway, today I’m offering you redemption in two forms: a chance to confess and a discount in return!

Here’s how it works: Leave me a confession in the form of a comment, along with your best excuse why you don’t have a gift yet. Go ahead and exaggerate a little; make it really compelling. (Think of it as a rehearsal for your valentine!) After you leave a comment, you’ll receive an email with a 15% discount code to use toward a valentine gift from MrsFields.com that we can have on your sweetheart’s doorstep as early as Monday! (Orders must be placed by 4:30 pm ET today, Friday.)

So, come on, get it off your chest and get a generous discount on a gourmet gift! And, as if the deal couldn’t get any sweeter, there’s a sweet shipping deal going on at MrsFields.com for all orders placed today by 4:30 pm ET!

Comments accepted until midnight, Sunday, February 14th!

Happy New Year!

Wow! The new year is here. In fact, a whole new decade is here. It seems like only yesterday when we were waiting for all the computers to crash and the lights to go out when we began this new millenium. That was ten years ago! We must have been having fun because time has certainly flown.

I hope you enjoyed a safe and happy New Year and that you’re enjoying a peaceful, restful holiday. I’m busy today making lists and reveling in the clean slate that is 2010. Oh, the possibilities of a brand new year!

Obviously, I’m feeling reflective today, and if you are too, I’d love to know: What are you looking forward most to in 2010?

What Are Your Favorite Holiday Movies?

I loved reading all of your slow-down ideas from our last giveaway, and it got me to thinking. One of my favorite slow-down activities to do during the holidays is to sit next to a roaring fire and watch a holiday movie. What’s on my must-see holiday movie list each year? It just wouldn’t be the holiday season without these:

  • Miracle on 34th Street (old and new version)
  • National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
  • Home Alone
  • Elf
  • A Christmas Story
  • The Muppet’s Christmas Carol
  • Fred Claus
  • White Christmas
  • It’s a Wonderful Life

That’s my list, but I’d love to know what’s on yours! Leave a comment and let me know your favorite holiday movie. I’ll draw a winning comment to win a $10 gift certificate to be used at MrsFields.com.

Secret Sale Update: The next Secret Two-Hour Sale will be Thursday, December 14th, at 1:00 Eastern Daylight Time!

Show Off Your Halloween Style and Save!

I love, love, loooove to see all the wonderful ways people decorate their homes for Halloween. There seems to be no end to the creativity conjured up for this spellbinding holiday.

So, obviously I was excited then when I received an email this week from one of our customers and readers, Danielle. She sent me some photos of her Halloween decor, which happens to include several of our decorative pieces. I asked if I could feature them here, to give you an idea of how easily our gifts can be incorporated into your own decorations.

Five of the decorative pieces here are from Mrs. Fields Gifts. FIVE! I think they look amazing, don’t you? Our cookie jars, decorative tins, and ceramic bowls are part of Danielle’s annual decorations and have become keepsakes. I’ve got to be honest here, I feel like a proud parent. Like, Oh look at those precious jars and tins and bowls of mine out there in the real world looking so fabulous!

Does that make me weird? Actually, don’t answer that.

Anyway, Danielle’s email gave me a great idea. I’d love to see pictures of your Halloween decorations (especially if you’ve got pieces from Mrs. Fields)! Send your photos to mrsfields[at]mrsfieldssecrets[dot]com and I’ll feature them here on the Mrs. Fields Secrets blog! Plus, I’ll send you a 20% off discount to shop for more keepsakes at Mrs. Fields Gifts as a token of my appreciation. So, come on and show off your Halloween style!

Thank you for sharing these photos, Danielle! Your home is beautiful.

One more thing–are you howling over Danielle’s decorations? Some of them are still available.

Check them out (clockwise) here, here, here, and here!
