I’m starting a new blog series called “What’s Your Secret Ingredient?” I’ve invited other moms, bloggers, bakers, and otherwise interesting people to share their “secret ingredients” for success. Today’s secret ingredient comes from Cassie Alvey, the Director of Marketing and Merchandising at Mrs. Fields Gifts.
Like many people, I feel like my life is hectic, overwhelming, and crazy. Sometimes I feel like I’m waiting for someone to jump out and tell me I am on a hidden camera show called “Are you serious?” What’s my secret ingredient in dealing with it all? Laughter.
It seems totally cliché, but I find myself needing to stop sometimes and have a laugh and remember to not take life so seriously! Whether it’s at myself, a ridiculously fouled up situation, friends and family, or a complete stranger, I find that laughing gets me through my days, good and bad. Aside from the many proven health benefits like boosting the immune system, triggering endorphins, and improving heart health (and let’s be honest, with my work schedule, I am not hitting the gym as much as I should these days), I just enjoy the wonderful release of a good laugh.
I also find that laughter makes people want to be around me, and makes me like myself more. Laughter has strengthened my friendships and is my best ally in an awkward situation. It can even bring comfort to a friend in a tough situation when there is nothing else to say. Come to think of it, my fondest memories are of getting the giggles with my mom and sister or best friend, usually at some not-so-appropriate times.
Laughter has also truly helped me thru some of the most difficult times in my life, including deaths, losses and betrayals. I love that’s it’s always a tool in my arsenal. We all have the choice to laugh or cry and I choose to laugh!
